About This Game

Left 4 Dead 2 Server Hosting in the UK

Left 4 Dead 2 server setup on Linux via SteamCMD.

Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated servers are lightweight and mod-friendly, making them an excellent choice for running custom campaign sessions, competitive versus matches, or modded game modes. Our UK hosting provides the low latency essential for L4D2's fast-paced co-op and versus gameplay, alongside full root access for SourceMod and MetaMod installation, custom campaign placement, and add-on management. Multiple L4D2 servers can run on a single VPS simultaneously.

Game server performance at Glitch runs on AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processors - the high single-core clock speeds that game server software depends on for physics calculations, entity management, and script execution. NVMe Gen4 storage eliminates the map-load pauses and save-cycle stutters that affect game servers on spinning-disk or SATA SSD storage.

Network routing through AS212868 with direct LINX and LONAP peering keeps British players on UK-native ISP paths, avoiding the 30–60ms additional latency that routing via Frankfurt or Amsterdam adds for players connecting from UK residential broadband. Corero Smartwall DDoS mitigation is always on - game servers are frequent targets for volumetric attacks, and scrubbing runs at the network edge without adding processing latency to legitimate player traffic.

All plans include full root or admin access for custom configuration, mod installation, and plugin management. No port restrictions. Full game server plan details are on the game server hosting page.

External resources: LINX (London Internet Exchange) and Steam.

Why Glitch Servers

Hardware Built for Game Server Performance

Game servers demand high single-core clock speeds, fast storage for map loading, and DDoS protection as standard - not an upsell.

Getting Started

How to Get Your Server Running

Most servers are online within minutes of ordering.

1

Step 1

Install SteamCMD and download the L4D2 server (App ID 222860): steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 222860 +quit. The server is approximately 5GB.

2

Step 2

Create server.cfg in left4dead2/cfg/ with sv_lan 0, sv_password, hostname, and rcon_password. Install MetaMod:Source and SourceMod by extracting archives to the left4dead2/ directory.

3

Step 3

Launch with: ./srcds_run -game left4dead2 +map c1m1_hotel +maxplayers 8 -port 27015. Add SourceMod plugins to addons/sourcemod/plugins/ and custom campaigns to addons/. Restart the server to load new plugins.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Left 4 Dead 2's AI Director controls horde spawns, Special Infected placement, and pacing in real time based on player performance - all Director logic runs server-side, meaning high latency affects how quickly players perceive Director-triggered events. In versus mode, Special Infected spawns and position synchronisation are server-authoritative, so UK players on EU or US hosted servers see inconsistent SI spawn notifications and delayed boomer bile explosions. Glitch Servers routes through AS212868 with direct LINX and LONAP peering, keeping UK four-player teams under 10ms latency for immediate, accurate Director responses. Co-op groups running custom campaigns benefit particularly from low latency because complex scripted events and trigger zones fire consistently rather than with variable delay.
Yes - Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated servers support Steam Workshop custom campaigns, which players download automatically when joining if they do not have the campaign installed. Custom campaigns are activated in the server's mapcycle.txt rotation, and servers can run Workshop content without any special configuration beyond Workshop collection setup. Mutation modes - including Realism, Last Man On Earth, Chainsaw Massacre, and community-created mutations via SourceMod - are activated through server.cfg or console commands. Our servers provide full SSH and SFTP access for managing Workshop content, editing mapcycle.txt, and installing SourceMod plugin packages that extend mutation options beyond Valve's built-in set.
Left 4 Dead 2 is a Source engine game with relatively modest server resource requirements - each instance typically uses 512 MB to 1 GB RAM and low CPU between active games. A VPS with 4–8 GB RAM can comfortably run three to four simultaneous L4D2 instances, each on a different port, allowing you to host separate co-op and versus servers or multiple campaign slots from a single plan. Our KVM virtualisation provides dedicated CPU allocation, ensuring instances do not throttle each other during simultaneous active games. Each instance runs its own server.cfg, mapcycle.txt, and SourceMod installation independently, so co-op and versus instances can have different plugin configurations without affecting each other.
