Always-online UK Starbound universe - Workshop mods, custom content, DDoS protected

About This Game

Starbound Server Hosting in the UK

Starbound dedicated server setup on Linux via SteamCMD.

Starbound Server Hosting in the UK from Glitch Servers provides low-latency UK game server infrastructure with always-on DDoS protection - backed by AMD Ryzen hardware, NVMe Gen4 storage, and UK-native routing through AS212868. Starbound dedicated servers let your community explore a shared persistent universe without any player needing to remain online as host. Our UK hosting keeps your Starbound world online 24/7, with full root access for Steam Workshop mod installation, custom assets, and universe configuration. The server handles character storage server-side, meaning players' progress persists even if they switch PCs. NVMe SSD storage keeps universe chunk loading fast even in heavily explored universes.

Game server performance at Glitch runs on AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processors - the high single-core clock speeds that game server software depends on for physics calculations, entity management, and script execution. NVMe Gen4 storage eliminates the map-load pauses and save-cycle stutters that affect game servers on spinning-disk or SATA SSD storage.

Network routing through AS212868 with direct LINX and LONAP peering keeps British players on UK-native ISP paths, avoiding the 30–60ms additional latency that routing via Frankfurt or Amsterdam adds for players connecting from UK residential broadband. Corero Smartwall DDoS mitigation is always on - game servers are frequent targets for volumetric attacks, and scrubbing runs at the network edge without adding processing latency to legitimate player traffic.

All plans include full root or admin access for custom configuration, mod installation, and plugin management. No port restrictions. Full game server plan details are on the game server hosting page.

External resources: LINX (London Internet Exchange) and Steam.

Why Glitch Servers

Hardware Built for Game Server Performance

Game servers demand high single-core clock speeds, fast storage for map loading, and DDoS protection as standard - not an upsell.

Getting Started

How to Get Your Server Running

Most servers are online within minutes of ordering.

1

Step 1

Install SteamCMD and download the Starbound dedicated server (App ID 533831): steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 533831 +quit. The server is approximately 3GB.

2

Step 2

Edit linux/starbound_server.config to set your server name, max players, and password. Set rcon_password for remote admin access. The config is JSON format - be careful with syntax.

3

Step 3

Launch with: ./linux/starbound_server. Use screen or systemd to keep it running. Workshop mods go in the mods/ directory alongside the server binary. Restart the server after adding or removing mods.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Starbound's server scales reasonably well for small groups - 8 to 16 players on a single server is typical for community hosting, with performance depending on how many players are simultaneously active in different sectors loading new world data. Each active player loading a new planet or dungeon triggers server-side sector generation and asset streaming, which is the primary CPU and I/O workload. Our AMD Ryzen 9 7950X handles Starbound's single-threaded sector management efficiently, while NVMe Gen4 storage at 3,500 MB/s means planet and dungeon data loads without the I/O stalls that cause loading screen timeouts on slower storage. For servers above 20 players with simultaneous exploration across many sectors, 4–8 GB RAM provides adequate headroom for concurrent sector data caching.
Starbound uses server-authoritative state for NPC behaviour, loot drops, and world modifications - at high latency, building and mining interactions have a perceptible delay before the server confirms changes, and NPC combat desynchronises in ways that make combat feel unresponsive. UK players connecting to non-UK servers typically experience 40–80ms additional round-trip latency that is particularly noticeable during co-operative dungeon exploration where timing matters. Glitch Servers routes through AS212868 with direct LINX and LONAP peering, keeping British players under 10ms round-trip for immediate interaction confirmation. Synchronised exploration across multiple players staying in the same sector feels noticeably smoother at sub-10ms latency than at the 40–60ms typical for EU-hosted alternatives.
Yes - Starbound dedicated servers support Steam Workshop mods through the steamcmd Workshop downloader, with Workshop content IDs listed in the server's starbound_server.config file. Mods are downloaded automatically on server startup when Workshop IDs are present in the configuration, and clients receive the mod list on connection - players need the same mods installed on their client to join. Full SSH and SFTP access means you can edit starbound_server.config directly to add or remove Workshop IDs, restart the server to trigger fresh downloads, and manage the mods directory manually for mods distributed outside Workshop. Popular mods like Frackin' Universe significantly expand the game but also increase RAM requirements, typically adding 1–2 GB to baseline memory usage.
