Forge vs Fabric
Before installing mods, you need a mod loader. There are two main options:
Forge and Fabric mods are not compatible with each other. Choose one and stick with it.
Installing Forge on Your Server
- Download the Forge installer for your Minecraft version from files.minecraftforge.net
- Run the installer and select “Install Server”
- Point it to your server directory
- Run the generated
forge-*.jarfile instead of the vanillaserver.jar - Accept the EULA, then stop the server
- Drop your mod
.jarfiles into themods/folder - Start the server again — Forge will load all mods automatically
Installing Fabric on Your Server
- Download the Fabric server installer from fabricmc.net
- Run it with:
java -jar fabric-installer.jar server -mcversion 1.21.4 - This creates a
fabric-server-launch.jar - Install Fabric API into the
mods/folder (required by most Fabric mods) - Add your mod
.jarfiles to themods/folder - Start the server with the Fabric launcher JAR
Installing a Modpack
Modpacks bundle dozens or hundreds of mods together. The easiest way to run one:
- Download the server pack from CurseForge or the modpack’s official page
- Extract the server files to your server directory
- Run the included start script (
startserver.batorstartserver.sh) - Players install the same modpack on their client using a launcher like CurseForge, ATLauncher, or Prism
Client-Side vs Server-Side Mods
- Server-side only: Plugins like Dynmap, performance mods like Lithium (Fabric). Players don’t need these installed.
- Both sides: Content mods that add blocks, items, or mobs (Create, Mekanism, Botania). Must match versions on server and client.
- Client-side only: Shaders, minimaps (JourneyMap), UI mods (Inventory Tweaks). Server doesn’t need these.
Troubleshooting
- Server won’t start: Check
logs/latest.logfor errors. Usually a mod version mismatch or missing dependency. - Players can’t connect: Ensure client and server have the exact same mods and versions. Even minor version differences cause connection failures.
- Lag or crashes: Remove mods one at a time to identify the culprit. Use Spark profiler to find performance bottlenecks.

Conclusion
Installing mods on a Minecraft server is straightforward once you've chosen your mod loader. Use Forge for big modpacks, Fabric for lightweight setups, and always make sure your server has enough RAM for the mods you're running.
