How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft (2026)

Diamonds are still the most important early-game mineral in Minecraft. They gate access to enchanting tables, Nether portals, and the best tools and armour before Netherite. This guide covers the best Y levels, mining techniques, and strategies for finding diamonds fast in 2026.

Best Y Level for Diamonds in 2026

Since the 1.18 Caves & Cliffs update, diamond ore generates differently. The old advice of mining at Y 11 is outdated.

Best level
Y -59
Range
Y -64 to Y 16
Peak concentration
Y -59 (deepslate layer)
Tool required
Iron pickaxe or better

Diamond ore concentration increases the deeper you go, with the highest density at Y -59. Below Y -64 is bedrock, so -59 gives you the best balance of density and room to mine.

Mining Techniques

1. Strip Mining (Branch Mining)

The most reliable method. Dig down to Y -59, create a main tunnel, then dig branches every 2 blocks to either side.

Why 2-block spacing? Diamond veins are 1–10 blocks wide. A 2-block gap means you cannot miss a vein — every possible ore position is exposed to at least one tunnel.

2. Cave Mining

Explore large deepslate caves at Y -20 to Y -59. Exposed cave walls reveal diamond ore without needing to mine through stone.

3. TNT Mining

Craft TNT and blast large areas at Y -59. Expensive but extremely fast for late-game diamond farming.

Fortune Enchantment

Always mine diamonds with a Fortune III pickaxe if possible. Without Fortune, each ore drops 1 diamond. With Fortune III, you can get up to 4 diamonds per block — effectively quadrupling your yield.

Tip: If you find diamonds before you have Fortune, mark the coordinates and come back later with a Fortune III pick. Don’t waste ore on a basic pickaxe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Y level -59 has the highest diamond ore concentration in both Java and Bedrock editions since the 1.18 world generation update.
Yes. Fortune III can drop up to 4 diamonds per ore block instead of 1. Always use a Fortune III pickaxe when mining diamonds.
Strip mining at Y -59 is more consistent. Cave mining can be faster if you find a large deepslate cave, but it is less predictable.
Yes. Diamond distribution is identical in Java and Bedrock since 1.18. Mine at Y -59 for the best results.

Conclusion

Diamonds are still the gateway to endgame gear in Minecraft. Mine at Y -59 using strip mining for consistent results, always bring a Fortune III pickaxe, and never mine without water buckets at lava depth. With these techniques, you’ll have a full diamond set within your first session.
